Well it took me a little longer to get back to this than I thought it
would, but I got a chance to look recently.

I used your patch as a starting point, but I took the opportunity to
clean up main.c a little and refactor things into helper objects.

One thing I still don't do is allow for a graphical splash on the main
display when there are serial consoles.  a future todo I guess.
