Can't display a message on shutdown

I'm using plymouth from Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to display a message on
shutdown, from a /etc/init.d script. I can't get it to work and I don't
know why.

I tried to follow the syntax found on failsafe.conf init script:

  plymouth message --text="Text!"

However, the message is never displayed. The script is actually being run,
as is that command. Some advice? Thank you!
