I've tested it with evince 0.8 and it works fine and also with epdfview."

Interesting, it's not only cairo backend specific but it's only reproducible by
using poppler_page_render() while it works by using
poppler_page_render_to_pixbuf() which is the reason why it works with evince
0.8.
