This bug was reported in <a href="https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693926">https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=693926</a> as:
"Whenever I try to print a PDF from evince, only the first character on each
line is printed. The rest of the line is blank. I have five journal articles
from "Physics Today" provided to me by my professor and this happens in all
them. Xpdf, however, can print them just fine."

This seems a regression either in poppler or cairo. It works fine with
pdftocairo 0.18.4, however I can reproduce it with pdftocairo 0.22.0.
FWIW, I ran:
$ pdftocairo -f 2 -pdf /tmp/DE_CP07.pdf pdfcairo-error.pdf</pre>
