<pre>Interesting little note: MuPDF does render the pdf example as expected here,
using the system freetype library as poppler does. I also did not find any
special handling of stem darkening in the mupdf sources.
So does poppler try to improve contrast by playing with gamma values? The
freetype people seem to call this "misusing" the library.</pre>
