Well, I don't think it is a bug in Xpdf, but a laziness in
both ghostscript and acroread. The Adobe technotes all talk
about UCS-2 encoding, and quite definately a single byte is
not valid UCS-2. That should end the discussion right there,
except that Adobe Acrobat does not (yet?) care about the
distinction.
