I want to add another obvious question:
* Which FreeType2 is used by poppler in your system?

I guess the trouble is caused by TrueType hints in
some Chinese fonts (e.g. MingLiU bundled to MS
Windows is well known font that is unreadably rasterized
when TrueType hints are simply ignored). The cygwin
screenshots taken on 2006 were such.

Recent FreeType2 improves the quality even if built
without patented TrueType hinting. Please check
FreeType2 version and its configuration on your system.
The latest FreeType2 is 2.3.12.
