 There is a good reason why Avahi is not detected out of the box. Avahi
 just isn't HOWL.  This is documented by the Avahi project, btw:

 Please note that I am both the core developer of Polypaudio and of Avahi.
 In the near future I plan to dump HOWL support in Polypaudio and replace
 it by native Avahi support. Polypaudio's Zeroconf predates Avahi hence it
 still uses the old HOWL API.

 Please be patient until we release an Avahi-only version of Polypaudio!
