On a machine with five ethernet interfaces (three from vmware, two
physical, and one eth0:avahi), when I click on the padevchooser icon, and
select "Default Server", I'm seeing ten instances of my hostname. Under
"Default Sink" and "Default Source", I'm seeing ten of each sink and
source.
I'm not sure why two per interface is showing up, as avahi-discover shows
one instance of everything per interface, but it seems logical to only
show a single item of each type per unique avahi cookie.

Changing the volume of a stream to 0% doesn't seem to actually silence
that stream, regardless of whether it's from the xmms pulseaudio plugin,
or an RTP stream. As this is the software volume control, rather than the
device volume, I'm guessing that the volume function isn't being passed
0.0.
Software versions are 0.9.5-5ubuntu4.1 on Ubunutu feisty.

It would be useful to be able to simply switch off a stream in the volume
controller. This is particularly useful if there are more than one RTP
streams on the network.
What this should mean is that no work gets done with regards to that
stream, which, again, probably matter most for the RTP receive module, but
also means that a user setting the volume on a 'disabled' stream to
something other than 100% shouldn't burn cycles doing nothing.
If directing to a null sink happens to be functionally equivalent, then
perhaps all that's needed is a null sink included in the default
configuration.

Comment (by tanuk):
I noticed that there has been left a kind of debug message in the patch,
that shouldn't be there. Search for "Perhana" and delete the line.
Also a semaphor might be more efficient than signaling with conditionals.
And caching the buffer pointers is incompatible with an experimental
feature of jackdmp, the multi-processor friendly jackd replacement.
I can do these changes, if you want. After the core upgrade, of course.

gcc-snapshot is ubuntu gcc (GCC) 4.3.0 20070414 (experimental), which
might be broken (I would not take the risk to say so).
it seems they ship there own headers "include-fixed" on top of libc (and

Comment (by lennart):
The reason for this bug is probably just that the service name that PA
concatenates from the hw name and stuff is longer then the maximum allowed
DNS-SD name. Should be easy to fix in PA by truncating/ellipsizing the HW
info string in some sensible way.

The way it is now with the JACK module is that it's required to have JACK

This is wrong. I don't see any reason for pulseaudio at all to implement
JACK transport.

#106: PulseAudio should separate persistent from temporary data
---------------------+------------------------------------------------------
Reporter: kalaleq | Owner: lennart
Type: defect | Status: new
Priority: low | Milestone:
Component: daemon | Severity: minor
Keywords: |
---------------------+------------------------------------------------------
Currently, when running as a system-wide daemon, pulseaudio stores all its
files in /var/run/pulse. However, according to FHS only temporary, run-
time data should be stored under /var/run. Data in /var/run can be
deleted between system boots, so persistent data that should be maintained
between boots should go under /var/lib or possibly /var/state by default.
In pulseaudio's case, GConf data and the volume-restore.table file, as
well as any other persistent-state files, should be moved under
/var/lib/pulse or a similar directory, with all runtime files remaining
under /var/run/pulse. Ideally, GConf's lock files would go under
/var/run/pulse and its data store would live in /var/lib/pulse, but i'm
not sure this is possible with GConf's design.
Looking at the code, it seems the solution would be to split
PA_SYSTEM_RUNTIME_PATH into two different variables, one for
temporary/runtime and one for persistent data.

It seems PulseAudio uses a lot of CPU, more then 2 times as much as 4
mplayers together playing mp3/ogg streams. This is probably not such a
great idea, as the PulseAudio has a very high
priority.
When I look at the daemon with strace, I notice a _lot_ of polling, I
would like to suggest looking
into using something like epoll or better even, because PulseAudio is so
portable across platforms,
libevent.
It's just a suggestion.
I don't know the code very well, so maybe I've got it all wrong, it's just
my first thought when looking at it.
It could possible make it more scalable and perform better.
I hope this was usefull, keep up the good work.

There was something I forgot to mention, using an event-based system like
epoll also could reduce power-usage, this is good for laptops, proper
funcioning of power management and good for system running 24/7 like
media-players.
It's also good for the energy bill and possible thus the environment might
you care about that last bit.

I'm getting USB devices with names like:
alsa_output.usb_device_ffffffff_ffffffff_noserial_alsa_playback_0
When I look in HAL the name is:
alsa_output.usb_device_471_155_noserial_if0_alsa_playback_0
My guess is that pulse is getting the name out of HAL before HAL has
received the reply from the USB device describing it's USB ID.HAL
probably starts the name off as FFFFFFFF and changes it when the USB
device responds. Note the missing if0. HAL hasn't picked the USB device
config to use yet.
This is happening pretty much every time I unplug/plug one of my USB
devices.

Recently with PA 0.9.6 and pavucontrol 0.9.4 the "Move Stream"
functionality does not seem to work reliably, often taking half a dozen or
so "clicks" to actually move the stream.
The command line pactl seems to do it correctly (tho' took me ages to work
out the syntax ;))
Does anyone else get this?

#113: Gnome panel volume control gets out of sync

Thread is: Gnome panel applet, July 15
have libgstreamer-plugins-pulse0.10-0 installed on Ubuntu. I'm able
to use the panel applet to control the volume and mute it, but
sometime the panel applet is showing the sound muted (when it's not)
or at a different volume than it is. There seems to be some kind of
synchronization issue between the display state of the panel applet
and the real state in pulse.
This may be related to suspend/resume. I'll watch it more closely and
see if I can notice when it gets out of sync.
If I exit the panel applet and start a new one, the correct state is
displayed.
