Comment(by coling):

 I've been doing some debug here in this area as Mandriva users are
 complaining about this too.

 It's a very tricky issue to work with as on some occasions skype works
 perfectly well.

 We had several reports from users that the 0.9.15 pre release builds were
 OK, including the final test8, but that 0.9.15 final was not.

 After some cherry picking I found a suspected "problem" commit of:

 {{{
 a4cea4e469d3baf27890820eba030b7acdf63daa is first bad commit
 commit a4cea4e469d3baf27890820eba030b7acdf63daa
 Author: Lennart Poettering <lennart@>
 Date:   Tue Apr 14 01:04:17 2009 +0200

      core: when applying delay memblockq take monitored sink latency into
 account

 }}}

 However, reverting that commit was still not producing the results I was
 looking for. It's very odd as my git build from the commit prior to this
 seemed to work OK whereas the git build of this commit didn't, but
 incorporating this into packages (e.g. reverting this commit) didn't
 produce the flood of possitive results I'd hope.

 Perhaps you can try on Gentoo and see if you get more success.

 Debugging skype is a royal PITA because we cannot see what foo it does to
 make things work so badly!

 It seems to like closing and reopening the device whenever it detects
 things going wrong. I'm sure if there was a way to disable this behaviour
 in skype that things would work better.

 I'm hopeful they will finally pull their finger out soon and get some
 better linux support out there.
