 Hmm, interesting. Looks as if the ALSA front:xxx device does not work
 properly (which is something that shoiuld be fixed in ALSA).

 Please check if this works:

 {{{
 $ aplay -v -D front:1 -f CD < /dev/urandom
 }}}

 This should generate noise on exactly two speakers. Please provide the
 output this prints.
