 Writing something like "front:CARD=xxx,DEV=yyy" does not really make
 sense, since the job of "front:" is actually to find the right device for
 a card to reach the front speakers. Hence what you write there uses
 "front:" to find the front device and then overrides that again.

 Also note, that HAL is obsolete these days, please use the udev module
 instead.

 Also, mentioning which PA version you are running is good idea.

 And I still don't get what issue you are reporting: with the profiles PA
 provides you select what you kind of output you want. So if you choose
 stereo output, you get stereo output. If you select surround output you
 get surround output. You seem to be looking for a stereo output that gives
 you surround output? That does not make much sense, unless you you employ
 upmixing, which PA employs anyway if you connect a stereo stream to a
 surround sink. So I am not sure what you are missing if you simply set
 your device to a surround profile?
