#891: sound is garbled occassionally with multiple applications playing

I often listen to music with Rhythmbox while chatting on Skype. Every
time I type or receive a message in Skype, it plays a new sound. On about
1% of such Skype sound events, the Rhythmbox stream gets garbled
immediately. Rhythmbox stays garbled until I it, but Skype sounds are
 still normal the entire time.

The problem isn't specific to Skype. GNU Backgammon also includes
occassional sound events (on dice rolls, etc.). These trigger the same
 behaviour.

The garbled sound seems different to my ears than just swapping the
endianness of the stream. It sounds less like white noise, and more like
 80s computer game music :)

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, which include pulseaudio 0.9.22.
