Further testing using the command below shows that remote speakers indeed work
as intended:

$ LC_ALL=C PULSE_SERVER=geode.lan speaker-test -c2 -twav

What instead seems to be the source of the problem is that the tunnel created
by paprefs on the client host, whenever "Make remote native audio sinks
available localy" is selected, is what crashes the remote host's PA server.
