Yes, using "xset s off -dpms", after setting the sound output to HDMI, and then
leaving the machine alone for about 45 minutes the system was still set to HDMI
output for sound, and had not switched to analog. So the problem indeed does
not occur if dpms is disabled - of course dpms needs to be reset back to normal
(enabled) again for continued use, since the monitor does not go into
powersaving mode if dpms is off.  Does this lead to a possible solution to the
problem?
