Are you still having this issue?
If so, there is a chance you can just turn the HDMI profile to "Off".
However, the message you describe as seeing on login is likely one from KDE's
Phonon system, not actually PA itself and it's possibly just an integration
issue. Chances are your KDE was not actually compiled with PulseAudio support
and that simply addressing this issue would solve all the problems.
If you still have an issue please attach the output of:
$ pacmd ls
$ PHONON_PULSEAUDIO_DEBUG=99 kcmshell4 kcm_phonon</pre>
