You could also modify module-bluetooth-discover to pass in a profile as 
an argument that it passes through to module-bluetooth-device.

As a patch this could potentially be merged upstream as it wouldn't 
interfere - that said there may be some reason that this is not done 
currently and thus it's not guaranteed to be merged.

As you said, pavucontrol 0.9.9 is released and does not suffer from this 
bug. It also affects 0.9.16+ rather than just 0.9.17+.
