Hey all,

Second round of patches, modulo the ones that got merged. Compared to the first
round the first patch is new and squashes the fixes for port status reporting
together & addresses the various comment on those. The remainder is the same as
before, although i did reorder things so fixes to the code are first and then
tweaks to the path configurations.

Btw, please keep me cc'd on comments, I don't follow the list very actively.
