I have noticed that module-jackdbus-detect requires jackd2. I am currently using jackd1. I have tried jackd2 but cannot get it to start; I spent a lot of time previously trying to get jackd2 to run but always I get:

Thanks for your reply.

Jack (the daemon, not the library) is not installed by default in
Ubuntu 11.10.

My ignorance.

But anyway, the server should not be started unless you run a
program that requires JACK, which is the essence of the problem here.

I have been starting JACK as a Startup Application because everything else seemed to work fine like that. Can you clarify - are you saying Google Talk probably won't work with JACK running? This wouldn't be what I want because I could be running Reaper, which needs JACK, but want Google Talk to give me a ring sound if I get an incoming call at the same time.

So if you need that, you need to make sure JACK has a pulseaudio sink. I've been working with that to some degree but not your particular use case (I've never heard of anyone having JACK in "startup applications".
"pacmd list-modules" should tell you if there is an "module-jack-sink" in there. If not, try loading it manually with "pacmd load-module module-jack-sink" and see if it makes a difference.
