We will always run into those problems and there is not much what
can be done about it. We can only ask developers to use as much
discretion as possible but it is not possible to completely rule
out that other OSes break. 
Having tinderboxes will help developers to identify such problems in
a timely manner and allow them to fix them - in some cases with the
help of the OS maintainer.
