I've worked a little bit more on this issue.
I guess more people should get moving on this.

A few questions:

Are we sure we need to change CVS tags? They only suggest that these files
where at one time in the XFree86 CVS.

Are you referring to ftxf86.h? Yes, I think the freetype project
come up with a more generic name. The function already has a generic
name.

These contain a lot of vendor specific names as they are used to build
the DDX of that specific vendor. I don't see why the XFree86 rules 
should be removed from there. If they aren't used they aren't used.



We also need to think what to do about the version number.
This isn't as trivial as it sounds as some files have version
specific build paths. This needs to be investigated and is
error prone!
Also I would like to invite those who advocate this to step
forward and get going on this. Since we are quite late in the
release cycle I would like to see people reviewing the code
changes that go in. For every change we therefore should have
at least two people: one who does the change and one who looks
over the code. Sorry, this is not mistrust, we just need to
make sure we don't introduce additional problems.
