I tested disabling the vioserial driver and now effectively it is able to suspend properly. Reenabling it as expected reverts the problem back. Another issue I dectected (I don't know if related) is that when Windows 7 turns off the "monitor" after a period of time th e VM crashes, disabling PM facilities, i.e., instructing windows not to suspend the monitor solves the issue.
