I (re)pushed this commit since I silently reverted it when cherry-picking
patches for 0.8.2. I got conflicts with

205193f25 build: only check for x11 extensions when building for x11 platform.
4492f4854 build: alsa is needed on linux only.

and when resolving the conflict, I did the wrong thing and readded these
lines instead of removing them.
Since this change had already been approved for the 0.8 branch, I repushed
it to fix my mistake )
