But it can be modified with flags. A process for deprecation would be equally necessary to a process for new messages. But only if it's needed. In general, the protocol doesn't evolve quickly enough for that to be necessary, we have been dealing with compatibility without to much burden (who needs the 0.4 spice1.proto these days?).

This is fud, like most protocol additions, when it's added, it has been tested by very few people.
