[stsf] STSF, XST and Xft/XST-bridge status ?

The most recent CVS version of STSF, 0.8.7, is an intermediate version
that includes a brand new ST Font Server protocol.

The protocol, which is currently supported only on Solaris passes all
data via shared memory and file descriptors. A control connection passes
only fixed length commands and reply codes. The control connection is
implemented using Solaris doors. The new protocol is very easy to
port to Linux, the only change needed is to implement a control
connection
using Unix domain sockets.

We are planning the following features for the next milestone release
of STSF (0.9):
	- full functionality to support STSF/Xft bridge under Xorg/Solaris x86
	- background font rescan
	- ability of the ST client library to dynamically reconnect to
stfontserverd

The most recent changes fixed several memory corruption problems (see
ChangeLog)
and were integrated over the weekend and are being tested now, so it's
too early
to judge how stable is the current STSF version

The target goal for release 0.9 of XST and Xft/STSF bridge components
is the
full support of the GNOME desktop. We have been experiencing some
problems,
however the most recent build seem to have addressed most of them.
