I suck at writing licensey stuff, but the gist of it is that all of the icons I converted to .ico can be used under the licenses that the original PNGs and SVGs were (anything less on my part would be in violation of those licenses anyways) ... for the most part, everything that's not a Gnome bit was (at least at the time?) cc-by-sa, and I made sure not to mix cc-by-sa and GPL material into composite icons. There are a few Windows-specific ones I remember making, like Regedit, and I seem to recall throwing a clause in my not-a-license-agreement that they could be used under whichever of the CC-by-SA or GPL make more sense. I don't have any problems with my stuff (the stuff in the "vertigosity" subfolder, namely) being used under the LGPL, for license compatibility with Wine.

As for making pixel-perfect shadowless magic-pink
transparency versions, I never really got much further than just hand-tweaking everything, which was horribly tedious. Some of the Gnome stuff worked pretty well, but there's just so many bezier curves in Tango(id) icons that eventually you just have to give up and let a few lines go to pot. I never really got around to
polishing it up or packaging it, but let me know if you want it, and
I'll blow the dust off it and at least send you a tarball.

On Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 4:54 PM, Joel Holdsworth <joel@airwebreathe.org.uk> wrote:

It's a bit different because it modifies windows with hacks, whereas I'm
modifying the wine source. It's an interesting idea, and the end result
is quite pleasing. Maybe he has some icons that I don't - but then it's
hard to be sure of the license there.

Hey! That's really cool. I guess this will get easier to use when
theming in wine becomes better implemented - for example when winecfg
gets a theme chooser. There is also some talk of creating a wine-qt and
a wine-gtk theme bridge, which would automatically take the system theme
and paint wine with it. That's a long time in the future.
