 I'd like to have an high level text channel / Messages API as well. This is
currently blocked by bug #29218 as we need to decide if we go for the subclass
or view approach.

You can already observe existing channels but not using an Approver. You need
to use an observer and set the "recover" flag. Best way is probably to define
your own object derived from TpBaseClient  and make it an Observer and
Approver.
