OK.  uim 0.4.6 now requires environmental variable GTK_IM_MODULE=uim.
And you can choose a default input method (maybe Pinyin (Simplified))
using uim-pref-{gtk,qt} tool.  So, after installation of uim and
configuration of the default input method, please try

 1. $ GTK_IM_MODULE=uim ./gtk-entry
 2. Press Shift-Space    (means [Global] on)
 3. Type 'ni' 'Enter' 'hao' 'Enter'    (Enter means commit preedit)
 4. Press Shift-Space    (means [Global] off)

You can change your preferred key setting (like [Global] on key and
[Global] commit key) with uim-pref-{gtk,qt}'s "Global key bindings".
