[Uim] problem using uim

I installed the new uim, from Debian packages. I've installed:

ii  libm17n-0      1.2.0-1
ii  m17n-db        1.2.0-1

When X starts, the following commands are run:

export XMODIFIERS=@im=uim
export GTK_IM_MODULE=uim
uim-toolbar-gtk-systray&
uim-xim&

locale is en_GB.UTF-8

But the only input method I get is "direct". I can activate the 
"switcher" by right-clicking on the systray icon, but it only 
offers "direct" and nothing else. What am I doing wrong?
