yes, this is very likely due the parent guessing workaround.

Kristian, I'm checking now the approach of setting a xwm specific 
surface->configure callback instead relying on the shell. So let's talk 
about this before duct-tape these wholes I've introduced; I'll poke you 
on IRC.
