I felt the same way and tried generating stubs.c in configure.ac 
rather than autogen.sh, but for whatever reason automake gets confused 
if stubs.c doesn't exist when it's run:  even though stubs.c is given 
as a direct dependency in Makefile.am, that dependency doesn't 
propagate to the Makefile.  Any ideas?
