Wonderful.  I've gone ahead as discussed and added mutex type support 
for mutexattrs, including the troublesome ERRORCHECK mutex type.  The 
work is in the mutexattr branch here:

It also contains two small patches which fix the build on *BSD.  I've 
tested building the mutexattr branch on Debian stable, OpenBSD 4.5, 
FreeBSD 8 and Solaris 10.

If we could get this hammered into shape and even cut a pthread-stubs 
release soonish, it could be added as a build-dep for the upcoming 
cairo 1.10.
