So I've modified the original patch, what's the preferred way for 
submission of the amended patch, a "git send-email" from a commit (using 
Chris as original author) in reply to this thread?

Does it need to be "signed-off-by" (considering that the original 
submission was a simple git-diff and not a git format-patch and was not 
signed off)?
