We can get away with this now as the database is still young, but what are
the stability guarantees like for the future? What if an application
expected ksh to be text/ksh and then it was renamed?

In fact there has already been such breakage when Gnome transitioned to
shared-mime-info (see script launching). 

Should there be a policy for this? Apologies if there already is one.
