Desktop entry category: Application

Hi,

My application includes a .desktop file containing the following Categories key: Categories=Application;Utility;TextEditor;GTK;

The application is a text editor and I just copy-pasted from a similar editor.
Now I got a question of a packager about the "Application" category. His package
tool generates a warning because this category is not in the menu spec.
However doing a quick grep over /usr/share/applications shows that there are more
desktop files contain this category.

What is the history of this category? Should I remove it or does it serve a
purpose outside the menu spec ?
