Below is the text of my bug against "registered categories".

But why do I bother? My bug is sure to be ignored just like these were:

====Text of bug follows:

Software will spread to all areas of human life. The list of main categories
AudioVideo, Audio, Video, Development, Education, Game, Graphics, Network,
Office, Settings, System, or Utility is woefully inadequate.

As bugs

39775 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39775
no place to file non educational medical software.
39777 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39777
No main classification for industial control software.
39779 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39779
No main classification for seismic data processing.
39780 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39780
No main classification for farm management software
39785 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39785 No main
classification
for ship Navigation software.

show, it is easy for any off the top of one's head to think of important areas
of software that is just not covered by the main categories, AudioVideo,
Audio,
Video, Development, Education, Game, Graphics, Network, Office, Settings,
System, or Utility .

But as the history of
20192 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20192 menu-spec
Categories: request for Spirituality and Philosophy

shows the system is extremely slow to create new categories!

GNU/Linux should be about freedom. But the document A. Registered Categories
http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html
in practice, seems to be about forcing people to mis-classify their software!

I have a proposal:
Create a Miscellanous unclassified, not applicable category, BUT have a rule
that you can not use it unless you file a bug stating why your software does
not fit the existing categories. Then freedesk top would have 6 month to close
this bug either by stating what existing category it fits in OR create a new
category. If by that time, freedesktop has not created a category or state
what
existing category fits, then the filer would have the right to create his own
category and freedesktop would have to put it in "Registered Categories".

This would prevent the dithering that forces people to misclassify their
software for years and years, but still give freedesktop an opertunity to
create order IF THEY ARE WILLING TO TAKE IT.

It seems a fair balence.

One of the charges against the British King in the Declaration of independence
was: "He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing
importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be
obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them."
It seems to fit the existing system. It needs to be changed.

Reality is that there is software that does not fit in the AudioVideo, Audio,
Video, Development, Education, Game, Graphics, Network, Office, Settings,
System, or Utility classifications. Your system conflicts with reality and is
causing confusion. It must be changed.
