Not directly; there's ${XDG_DATA_HOME}:${XDG_DATA_DIRS} or
${XDG_CACHE_HOME}, depending what you're storing.

Also, if I set my XDG_DATA_HOME to "$HOME/appdata" or something, the
spec says applications in $HOME/appdata/applications/*.desktop should be
found, but what's the corresponding "/var-like" directory for that?
~/.local/share is only a default.
