I get following messages in my Xorg.0.log (the same for XFree 4.4.0, 4.3.0 works):
FreeType: couldn't find encoding 'ascii-0' for
'/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/webfonts/verdanab.ttf'

I started X with startx and on the terminal are more informations:
FreeType: couldn't find encoding 'ascii-0' for '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/webfont
s/verdanab.ttf'
[GetFontOrFixed]: WARNING -- can't get font -webfonts-verdana-bold-r-*-*-14-*-*-
*-*-*-*-*, trying 'fixed'

It seams that the problem exists for all truetype fonts.

PS: I'm not very experienced with fonts, therefore please ask if you need more
