Confirmed that this is an ipo problem. 
The offending archives are:

../../programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/libxf86.a
../../programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/libxf86_os.a
Xext/libexts.a
../../programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/libxf86_os.a

The workaround is to use -zallextract for the offending archives.
i.e. surround those archives like:

... -zallextract Xext/libexts.a -zdefaultextract ....
