 More precisely, there is a limit for the length of a 'composing sequence'
that includes the modified symbol (letter), all dead_keys and/or
compose_key.  This constand is hardcoded in Xlib sources (imLcPrs.c)  and
currently is 10.
I.e. the sequence can include up to 9 dead_keys besides a modified letter.
