Prerequisites for r300 with 3D?

So - I got a r300 card. What do I need to do for r300/3D?

Kernel 2.6.14+ with Radeon DRI enabled?
Just compile R6.9 or do I need to # define BuildDevelDRIDrivers YES in 6.9
final?

What else? A lot of people have been looking forward to this and I haven't
met one who go tit working by now.
