Using HAL for X Server Config Properties?

The complaint I have heard about HAL is that it's a fairly direct mapping to 
Linux 2.6's sysfs, which may not be the appropriate model for other systems.

But I think the important thing here is not HAL necessarily, so much as just 
getting the information to the server through some common communication 
channel.  DBUS provides the medium, HAL (or its moral equivalent) provides 
the message.
