Isn't that due to a dot clock too high used by the video card?
If a card uses a high dot clock, and the mode has a low resolution, then
the rate of vertical and horizontal sync goes very high. And the monitor
could deny this.
Well... ehm... if I recall right.
I'm definitely not sure.
