Dual-Head with i810 driver and 945 chip on Dell laptop

I'm trying to get dual-head working on this 945 based laptop. It has a VGA
output that I have connected to an LCD. But whatever I do I get:

(II) I810(0): No active displays on Pipe A.
(II) I810(0): Currently active displays on Pipe B:
(II) I810(0):   LFP (local flat panel)

I've scanned the archives and it seems this may be a known problem fixed in
git. But that was a while ago and I've updated to a recent release. As of what
version should this be working? I'm up to 1.7.2 (debian revision 4).
