It did not fail at all, from the log:

(cd /usr/X11R7/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers && rm -f i810_drv.so && ln -s intel_drv.so i810_drv.so)

Just that my build-system (T2 SDE - http://www.t2-project.org) was smarter than
me and noticed that the file was previously modified (due to my manual
modesetting compilation) and thus saved it for me:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1768321 Feb  3 18:41 i810_drv.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      12 Mar 11 13:50 i810_drv.so.new -> intel_drv.so

So all fine with "make install" and the new driver.
