It appeared to be letting me do the full width before (3320).

Hmm, after making your suggested change, I can clone the screens
(semi) fine.  (The laptop screen still appears to think it has a
virtual size of 1920x1200, and so the bottom and right are cut off a
little bit.  I guess if you are cloning you want to clone to the
external... especially if you have a projector, so maybe this is a
feature and not a bug).  When I try and run dual screen it fails....

$ xrandr --output LVDS --auto --left-of VGA
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 2048x2048 (desired size 3320x1200)

So, I'm confused as to what the limitation is.  As I said, I could
previously use a screen 3320 pixels wide.  Is it that DRI won't work
on such a wide screen?  (Bye bye beryl?)  I almost think I prefer the
wide screen to being able to run beryl.
