yes, you're right. I' ve just discovered the sites 5 minutes ago -)
Thank you for reminding me of the modular X. 
I've upgraded to x11-drivers/xf86-video-nv 2.1.5 as you mentioned. 

Gotcha:


(II) NV(0): Output LVDS connected


X is now working properly with nv.
