vesa/X mode problem - was: Re: i830m, no 1400x1050 LCD / xrandr

when grub boots with no vga option I get my 1400x1050 resolution,
when grub boots with vga=0x31 (1280x1024,64k) X get only 1280x1024.

Is this normal?
