DPMS stand-by: how to disable keyboard wake-up?

I am working on a small set-top box application.

In order to put the box in stand-by mode, I use "xset dpms force off" to
switch off the LCD monitor.

Problem is that any key pressed on the keyboard will immediately wake up
the monitor from DPMS stand-by mode.

But I need to decide myself when to enable the screen again ("xset dpms
force on"), for example only when a specific key is being pressed, and
after I have run the necessary (re)initialization scripts.

So how can I disable automatic monitor wake-up?
