Okay, great, yeah that's one of the first steps.  

You might want to consider breaking svg2png out into a separate package
at some point; in the future people may be searching their distros for
it and not realize it's part of the cairo package.

Yep, I remember those discussions.  We'd planned to investigate svg2png
more, but time's been scarce.  I think the team has gotten enough handle
on the infrastructure now that it makes sense to start looking into use
of svg2png for the thumbnails.  I'm cc'ing the list in case someone
would like to start playing with it.
